Eva Lois of Milwaukie lost more than half her monthly money to on online loan ruse, Aug. 2, 2013 (KOIN 6 News)
MILWAUKIE, Ore. (KOIN) — Eva Lois lives on just more than $800 per month, but she fell victim to an online loan ruse that took more than half her money.

“I cried a lot. I prayed a lot because, you know, I try to be a pretty smart person. I can usually tell when somebody is running a game on me,” she told KOIN 6 News.

But this game went right over her head.

After finalizing terms for the online loan, the “loan officer” said to load $408 onto a cash card as a way of verifyng she had enough cash to make the first two payments on her loan. She gave the cash card number to the man, who said he would transfer it right back.

He never did.

After the money was gone, another man from the same outfit left her a message and called her again to try and get another $300 from her.

“I’m crying and trying to explain to him, ‘You cannot do this to me. You have taken all of my money. This is what I have to live off of,” she said.

KOIN 6 News called the loan office and heard a non-corporate voice message. No one has returned the call.

“I keep crying,” she said. “That is not my style. Smiling is my style. I love to make people laugh.”

Lois is down but not defeated.

“I used to tell my sisters and my mom, she would be shaking her head and saying, ‘How could you, Eva? You do not get old being a fool.”

After her rent is paid, she will have only $160 for the month of August.

She went public with this story to warn others about the dangers of trying to get a loan online.

Ron Sloy was interviewed by KOIN Local 6 in a follow up news story on August 6, 2013.
